Iphone 4s: the most amazing phone or the greatest disappointment?

There are already many comparisons of technical features of iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. I won’t rewrite them: you can read yourselves: iPhone 4S vs. iPhone 4: what's changed? You’ll also find an interesting article here: iPhone 4S vs. the smartphone elite: Galaxy S II, Bionic and Titan. As for my impressions, iPhone 4S acquired high-performance hardware (e.g. a Dual-core Apple A5 processor) and a better camera (8 megapixel AF with flash). It also possesses some new features I find very remarkable for the whole mobile software development:

Siri. It’s the application for voice control of your iPhone. It uses natural language processing to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to an expanding set of web services. Siri announced that their software would be available for BlackBerry and for Android-powered phones, but all development efforts for non-Apple platforms were cancelled after Apple's purchase of Siri. Siri understands what you say and also what you mean, so you can really talk to your phone.

Siri understands what you say and also what you mean, so you can really talk to your phone. As for me, I find this a little bit weird. Of course, voice control is a very convenient thing, but Apple promises a real small-talk with your phone. Just imagine this:

  • Any good burger joints around here?
  • I found a number of burger restaurants near you.
  • Hmm. How about tacos?
  • I’ll look for Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood.
    • It sounds really strange for me. You can talk so to your friend or your secretary, but to a phone?

iCloud. This technology stores your music, photos, documents, and more and wirelessly pushes them to all your iDevices. It is really convenient, but you have to posses more than one Apple device for enjoying this technology. Actually, that is the point to make you buy iPads, MacBooks and so on.

What do I want to say with this post? I have two main thoughts.

The appearance of the iPhone 4S disappointed thousands of those people who were expecting the iPhone 5. But iPhone 4S is a different phone with many new features. It still has only the same design and the same number. Does it make iPhone 4S a real disappointment? Is the number more important than hardware and software?

And finally, Apple has really created a nice, convenient and usable ecosystem around its customers. But technologies supplant real people out of this system more and more. That’s why I’d prefer type SMS with my fingers – and talk to my friends and not to my phone. Even if it is an iPhone. And what do you think about it?
